Removal of Organic Pollutants from Wastewater Using an Agitated Batch Photo catalytic Reactor.

The photo catalytic oxidation (PCO) technique was utilized in the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater streams using an agitated batch reactor. The reactor consisted of a mixture of TiO2 powder and wastewater agitated with continuous stirring until the adsorption reaction was complete. A constant intensity UV light was utilized (l = 365 nm) in the reactor irradiation. The variables studied were; the TiO2 particle concentration, type of organic pollutants, the reaction/irradiation time, and the rate of stirring. The PCO reactor showed a waste removal of up to approximately 55% depending on the type of organic waste and the TiO2 concentration. The percentage removal showed a sharp increase with the stirring time until a time between 40 and 50 min and then a plateau was observed. Increasing the ratio of TiO2/Organic waste concentration to 6:1 increased the waste removal until it reached a maximum value of approximately 65%.
